Divided Iraqi Parliament Grapples With Resolution
(2002-11-11) -- A sharply divided Iraqi Parliament today continued to grapple with whether to accept the terms of the United Nations' new disarmament resolution.

The parliament is about evenly divided between those who support Saddam, and those who support Saddam.

"The lines have been clearly drawn," said one parliamentary aide. "Many members feel an obligation to represent their constituents, every one of whom voted to re-elect Saddam last month. Yet there are others who feel the need to vote their consciences, in which case they would support Saddam."

The debate over the U.N. resolution interrupted the regular Parliamentary agenda, which called for deciding the height of the new statue of Saddam which will grace the entry of the Parliamentary hall.
