Any particular investment or class of investments can have a negative return over a given period. In the long-run investing in productive activities should have a positive return. But as Keynes said "in the long-run we are all dead". What I do know is that even in the fairly short-run the expected return for gambling is negative. I only like lottery gambles where the potential payoff is huge relative to the stake or where skill is involved (horse racing - I don't have the skill but some do). Casino gambling isn't attractive to me.
