U.S. corporate insider activity will be a key gauge of the stock market’s health.

A near-term correction in equities is underway, as investors are quick to lock in any gains because previous rallies have proved to be bear traps. One measure that should help gauge whether stocks will have more staying power is the insider sell/buy (S/B) ratio. The latter remains at a low level, but has been creeping higher in recent weeks. A sustained advance in the S/B ratio would signal that insiders were not confident about profit prospects. The rally in late-2001/early-2002 was accompanied by a surge in the S/B ratio, which accurately warned that the rally would abort. In sum, keep a close eye on insider activity in the coming weeks.
