Shipments of the powerful personal computers used for engineering and scientific tasks rose to 367,710 from 345,156 a year earlier, according to preliminary data. Shipments rose in the second quarter after five quarters of declines, Gartner said in a press release issued by Business Wire. Dell Computer Corp., the world's biggest PC maker, extended its market share to 40.5 percent from 33.4 percent. Hewlett- Packard Co., the world's second-biggest PC maker, retained its No. 2 spot as a workstation vendor as its market share fell to 22.1 percent from 26.2 percent and it shipped fewer workstations. International Business Machines Corp., the world's largest seller of computers and computer services, overtook Sun Microsystems Inc. for the No. 3 spot, increasing its market share to 15.3 percent from 13.4 percent and shipping more workstations than a year earlier. Sun Microsystems shipped fewer workstations as its market share fell to 14.4 percent from 17 percent. ``We're hesitant to say the workstation market is completely out of the woods,'' Gartner analyst Pia Rieppo said in the statement. ``There are still no new compelling technologies in the workstation market.'' The shares of Austin, Texas-based Dell fell 55 cents to $29.24 at 9:39 a.m. Monday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Shares of Santa-Clara, California-based Sun Microsystems fell 11 cents to $3.18. Shares of Armonk, New York-based IBM fell 58 cents to $77.01 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Shares of Hewlett-Packard, based in Palo Alto, California, fell $1.14 to $15.54.
