hi huey,

Nevertheless, I am convinced that continued phony accounting is bad for the health of the U.S. economy in the long run. "Denial" of the problem is only a short term band aid at best.

i agree with your prognosis. however, i also agree with Larry that our politicians and corporate leaders are likely to take the low road, as they always do. this means they will stay in denial.

there is a huge collusion of interests in maintaining high stock prices. not only the politicians, the pension fund investors, and the sleazeballs running certain companies, but also all the people whose portfolios have been destroyed these past couple years due to their exposure to tech stocks, and who maintain the naive belief that they can only make a comeback by investing in more of the same.

and it really goes beyond our own borders: all the countries that run chronic current account surpluses with us want to maintain the status quo.

the interest in honest accounting is really a minority. especially when you add in the pension fund fiasco on top of the options fiasco.

however, a grand illusion cannot be perpetuated forever, so ours must end too. the only question is when and how.

my vote continues to be that it will take a long time, due to all the vested interests trying to prop up the market. amongst which we can count that scumbag Greenspan as suspect number one.
