A few years ago, we toured a mine in Columbia, Calif, on a school field trip. It was still a working mine, although, like this one, not terribly profitable. Boy, the miners do not like the government very much.

The miner showed us the mother lode.It was a band of quartz about 18 inches wide, running some 200 hundred miles in length, with a thin band of color down the middle. He said they didn't know how deep the thing ran. It's estimated that only about 7% of California's gold has been mined.
