What good was the "legitimacy in Western eyes" to the Chechen independence movement when there was little-to-none Islamist influence?

Now that "Muslim" has become a cuss word for many "Western eyes", Putin is using it to go harder (if possible) on Chechnya. You know it and I know it and so does Putin that his talk of "They talk about the need to kill all non-Muslims, all cross-bearers. Chechen rebels want to kill Americans and their allies." is a lot of crap.
