I would assume the GSM overlay would be done much the same way the initial CDMA overlay was done in the US. When CDMa was first introduced, they took out 4 analog channles and made that part of the spectrum (1.25 MHZ wide) allocated to CDMA. The 4 analog calls deleted were replaced with 30 or so CDMA calls. Once they had more handsts out there, they then replaced another 4 analog channels with 30 more CDMa channels, until today they have like 1200 CDMA channels and 8-12 analog channels.

In GSM, you can block it out exactly the same way. Take out 6-12 GSM channels and replace it with 60 or so CDMA1x channels. Then as your handset mix changes, replace GSM channels with CDMA channels.

Also in analog, the highest 5% users were sent for free a CDMA handset. I would suspect they would have simliar plans. The announcement of the MSM6500 is exactly for supporting the GSM1x system and GSM fallback modes.

A short answer, yes they can share bands.

In most places such as US and China one could put the GSM1x in the same frequencey as the GSM in the manner engineer explained for CDMA and analog in the US.

However, I think you may be right that in Europe one would be prohibited from putting GSM1x in the same band as GSM because this band is reserved for the GSM technology across Europe. It is technically possible but not politically possible under current regulatory regime. This could change if service providers really wanted it to change and petitioned regulatory bodies to do so but it would take time.

They might be able to put the GSM1x in the 3G band at 2.1ghz though and have the roaming occur on the 900 mhz band on GSM. To do this though the 1x part would have to be considered "3G" by ETSI - actually now that GSM1x is officially positioned with the release that has 384 kbps it might be possible.
