Network Appliance posts 2nd-qtr profit

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov 12 (Reuters) - Data storage computer maker Network Appliance Inc. (NasdaqNM:NTAP - News) on Tuesday swung to a fiscal second-quarter net profit from a year-ago loss as revenue rose 11 percent.



For the quarter ended October 25, Sunnyvale, California-based Network Appliance said it had net income of $15.8 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with the year-ago net loss of $11.2 million, or 3 cents, a year ago. Revenue rose to $215.2 million from $194.7 million.

Excluding certain nonstandard items, Network Appliance said it would have earned a profit of $17.5 million, or 5 cents a share. Analysts had on average expected a profit of 5 cents, within a range of a profit of 5 cents to 6 cents, according to Thomson First Call.

Pro forma results exclude amortization of goodwill and intangible assets, stock compensation, restructuring charges, impairment loss on investment, gain on sales of intangible assets and related effects on income taxes.
