Not strange at all, if you take history into account the affinity of the Russians to the Muslims / Arabs was just a part of the "new politic" to have access to "warm water" ports. After all Russia is almost "land -locked" to protect their flanks. That is why St. Petersburg was build together with Murmansk and why Russian quickly annex the Baltic States.

Other than that Russians have a long history fighting against the Islamic Caliphate. Actually that was one reason that the Ukraine joined Russia at the time
