Bob, yes, the audible sound comes from the surface the beam strikes, or the person it hits hears it.
The speakers could be placed throughout the arena, or merely aim the beam where you want the sound to originate, the beam travels several hundred yards.
Yes, the beam can be spread to cover a wider area.
Sound can be spread wide or narrowed down. The sound quality and volume is much improved since you visited them.
Call the company and speak with them.
