If the only change between the current situation and the one that would have resulted if the Israelis had ethnically cleansed in 1948 and/or 1967 would be the ethnic composition of the territories involved, then you're right, the Israeli situation would be stronger now than otherwise. But you're ignoring the diplomatic consequences of such a blatantly illegal action. Israel without US support wouldn't have lasted much past 1967.

Carl, what are you talking about? Israel didn't even get US support (apart from Truman's initial recognition, over the violent protests of the Arabist State Department) until after 1967. The Israelis fought the Six Day War with French jets. The US only began to provide support to Israel after 1967, to counter-balance Soviet aid to the Arabs.

As for diplomatic consequences in 1948, it would hardly have been much different. The Jews of Palestine were being attacked by five Arab armies, who greatly outnumbered them in men and arms; and in that context, and in being still in the aftermath of the Holocaust, they had a certain leeway for action. As it is, they have occurred exactly the same hatred and opprobrium as if they had ethnically cleared the land, without reaping the benefits.

Where the difference would have come, of course, is in the Jews' own opinions of their actions, both in Israel and in the Diaspora. But that's a different story.

P.S. When teaching children to play chess, one of the big hurdles is getting them to analyze situations with the realization that the opponent's behavior will depend on their own

This from a man who still claims that Bush's warlike intentions towards Iraq were just a bluff for the sake of the elections? A little more humility would not come amiss.
