Abdulmelik Firat, who ran as an independent candidate in Turkey's November parliamentary elections, greeted voters in their native language while campaigning in a mostly Kurdish region in the southeast of Turkey. As a result, he was detained by police. Turkish election laws bar politicians from campaigning in languages other than Turkish. A judge later ordered him freed.
