Interesting that you should believe my aversion towards personal insults in intellectual discussions has anything to do with how I appear to others.

It is just how intellectual discussions are supposed to be - free of personal attacks. Ad hominem, after all, IS a logical fallacy.

NEW WARNING FROM 'OSAMA'
By NILES LATHEM

November 13, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence officials were last night studying a frightening new recording said to be of Osama bin Laden - the first possible proof he's still alive.

In the chilling audiotape, broadcast on the al-Jazeera Arabic TV network, a man claiming to be bin Laden - and who American experts say sounds like him - praises recent Islamic attacks in Bali, Moscow and elsewhere.

The bombshell tape, in which the speaker refers to events as recent as last month, is the strongest evidence to date that the fanatic Saudi-born millionaire, missing for more than a year, is alive and ready to intensify his global holy war.

The man on the tape - whom al-Jazeera said was bin Laden - invokes the plight of the Palestinians, refers to the looming showdown with Iraq and threatens the United States and its allies.

"If we get bombed, you get bombed. If we get killed, you get killed," the man says.

The speaker threatens Britain and other Western nations, saying, "The road to a secure life will begin when you give us peace.

"We warned Britain about more attacks, and remember the Moscow killings, and wait what is going to happen to you."

The CIA was doing an extensive voice analysis of the tape last night to verify if it was bin Laden's.

U.S. officials told The Post they are taking the tape seriously.

"So far, we think it's him," said one intelligence official who has listened to hours of bin Laden's recordings.

Last night, MSNBC quoted two unnamed U.S. officials saying in more certain terms that the voice is bin Laden's.

"It's him," both officials - who work at different agencies - told the network.

Another official said that a final determination on the authenticity of the tape could be made by today.

"It sure sounds like [bin Laden]," the official said. "And we believe it could well be him, and there is no apparent reason to suggest it's not him."

The chief editor of the Arab News, an English-language daily newspaper in Saudi Arabia - and a man who has interviewed bin Laden several times for a number of hours each time - also listened to the tape and told MSNBC that there was "no question" that the mystery voice was that of the terror boss.

Bush administration officials fear that if it is bin Laden, he could be trying to revive his terror network and signal a new wave of devastating attacks on U.S. facilities.

Bin Laden was last placed in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan in early December 2001, when intercepted radio messages revealed he was hiding in an underground cave fortress from U.S. airstrikes.

Officials also believe that if it is bin Laden on the latest tape, it's clear he has stopped communicating to his followers by video - possibly to conceal his location and the state of his health.

Last year, U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that an infamous video from bin Laden, claiming credit for the Sept. 11 attacks, was made in the Paktia province because of the unique formation of rocks behind him.

Another video released to al-Jazeera last December demoralized al Qaeda because bin Laden looked weak and gaunt and appeared to be unable to move his right arm.
