Even if the dividend were just 10 cents per quarter, it would do for QUALCOMM exactly what it did for Intel, back in 1990 or thereabouts, when Intel first began paying dividends: It would allow many pension funds to invest in the company, since many pension funds are restricted to stocks that pay dividends.

In my view, QUALCOMM needs cash for continued strategic investments, but it could certainly consider a modest dividend in order to broaden the institutional appeal of the shares.
