Regarding the GSM1x trial, the smart money appears to be on Unicom. I think it's MII and Mobile.

I agree. China Mobile needs to put pressure on WCDMA vendors more than on CDMA2000 vendors. First the product doesn't yet work well, second it appears to be much more expensive to install and operate, and third it will be significantly more expensive on the royalty front with two royalty consortia already announced and many IPR holders yet to announce, all on top of Q royalties the same as for 1x.

China Mobile bringing in GSM1x for a test commits them to nothing, and any bad press can be dismissed with references to due diligence. GSM1x could enable them to get to 1x as fast or faster than China Unicom can get there without it, so not only does this idea have value as a ploy to pound the WCDMA crowd with, but it's a viable technical strategy that they genuinely need to evaluate.

China Mobile gets my vote.
