I think that we are trying to understand OBL and AQ from our own perspective. The goal is to establish an Islamic theocracy free from the Infidel. To rally the troops and communicate his message to millions of young people quickly he needs to take bold and decisive action. Any response from the West will further the case for an Islamic middle east free from the Infidel.

One thing we miss is that his fundamental fear is right. The forces of (western) globalization are a very real threat the the values, world view and power of the radical Islamist. If they proceed unchecked, the middle east will be absorbed into the global economy and much of the ancient Islamic identity will transform.

He is fighting for the future of his belief system and, in his mind, his religion. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

He is not attacking the west as much as he consolidating power in the Islamic world.
