I feel about anarchy what some, particularly some on the moderate left, feel about communism. That its a good idea in some very abstract sense but that it doesn't work in the real world. (BTW I don't share that view about communism, I think it is an evil idea at least when it is imposed on people).

Anarchy doesn't work because people will not act peacefully and cooperate without government and laws and structure. But also anarchy doesn't even work well even if you accepted the chaos that comes with it. Its unstable. You don't get no government you get whoever has the most power making himself in to a dictator, or perhaps you get a bunch of squabbling would be dictators and you have to dodge the crossfire. You get something of a government even if it only controls a small area or changes all of the time. Pure anarchy is like pure communism, it won't happen in a large area with a lot of people for a long time, and is unlikely to happen in a small area with a few people for more then a short time.
