Dear JF: Well, there are two schools of thought regarding why we maintain troops in Korea. I suspect there is truth to both of them:
1. They serve as a TRIPWIRE in the event N.Korea were to attack. The mere fact OUR troops are in harms way means we would HAVE to respond.
2. A little known fact, at least when I was in the Military, was that those troops were there to keep SOUTH Korea from attacking NORTH. Yeah, its true. There was a time, dont know status anymore, when we actually had to limit their FUEL SUPPLIES to make DAMN SURE they didnt start and incident. The South Koreans are NO PUSHOVERS anymore. JDN
