Gartner Dataquest Says Latin American PC Shipments Decreased 5 Percent in Third Quarter of 2002

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov 14, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- PC shipments in Latin America exceeded 1.7 million units in the third quarter of 2002, a 5.4 percent decline from the same period last year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB).

Despite a 28.7 percent decline in PC shipments, Hewlett-Packard led the overall market. HP had more than double the PC shipments of its nearest competitor, IBM (see Table 1). IBM experienced the strongest growth rate among the top-tier vendors. It experienced strong performances in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela.

"A more refined vertical market approach and integrated offerings in the professional segment are some of the reasons for IBM's solid performance in the quarter," said Luis Anavitarte, vice president and research director for Gartner Dataquest's Latin America group. "With HP's growth rate decline slowing down from the first half of 2002, and IBM's performance, Dell experienced slower growth than previous quarters. In the first and second quarter of this year, Dell had grown 63 percent and 31 percent, respectively."

The notebook market experienced a 1.5-percent increase in shipments in the third quarter of 2002. Toshiba was the No. 1 vendor in the Latin American notebook market for the third quarter of 2002, with 29 percent market share. HP was the No. 2 vendor with 22.4 percent of the segment, followed by Dell, which accounted for 12.5 percent of notebook shipments.

Brazil, the No. 1 country for PC shipments in the region, accounted for 46.1 percent of shipments, but it suffered a decline of 3.3 percent from the same quarter last year. PC shipments in Mexico, the No. 2 country, increased 4.5 percent, as vendors such as IBM and Dell capitalized in this market with growth rates of 167 percent and 49 percent, respectively.

"Some countries in the region, such as Venezuela where shipments declined 20 percent, have been impacted by imported used PCs," Anavitarte said. "These used PCs have affected new PC sales and have partially interfered with the adoption of new technologies."

This information is produced by Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platforms Latin America group. The group provides research on key aspects of the dynamic PC, server and printer hardware markets in Latin America. The focus is on regional and country issues in the top eight Latin American markets and the Rest of Latin America (ROLA) category, where Central American and Caribbean countries are grouped.
