As most government agencies are apt to do they like to come up with new acronyms. In essence the GFS is the new name for all of the model output that used to go by the old acronyms of AVN (Aviation model) and MRF (Medium Range Forecast). The algorithms in the GFS have been tweaked a bit, as you stated, thus allowing them to come up with a new acronym to cover what was under two acronyms. Sorry guys to digress from the PM talk but wanted to clarify the weather stuff for anyone who cares.
