Boz, I felt the WSJ story was so confusing that I read it two times...believe the reporter who wrote it didn't fully understand the issues he was writing about, for one thing.

There are more factors involved than "economic barriers" when it comes to gaining access to the MLS.

For one thing, the history of "organized real estate" reflects the need to create an organized real estate market where the MLS functions as a clearinghouse of information about homes for sale and sold, and discipline is applied to make sure it stays that way.

If a FSBO (who is neither licensed by the state and subject to state rules nor a subscriber to the Realtor's Code of Ethics and subject to disciplinary action) starts plopping his house listing into the network, who will have oversight authority over the accuracy of his data.....and why should the public be able to access the names and phone numbers of sellers who hired Realtors and the MLS to, among other things, maintain some privacy and handle the phone calls, showings and appointments?
