I imagine that if America were under assault for several decades, we'd have some fairly militant types in charge, The types running North Vietnam at the end of the war were the same types running at the end of the war. Long before the war, there were millions of refugees who fled from North to South Vietnam to escape Communist oppression. The simple truth is that Communism was an evil, oppressive system. This isn't a controversial opinion. Its common knowledge that everyone knows. It's why so few actually believe in Communism anymore.
