In Canada SIN# or Social Insurance Number has a very specific role but that does not stop many businesses and various levels of govt. attempts to abuse it.. As some one who worked as a Data Administrator in IT, know all about there is to know about this topic but for those who are interested, here is a link that you might find interesting..
