On 2 Oct, when DELL preannounced better than expected results, the stock was at $25 and change.

The only reason for the rise to almost $31 was because expectations had risen beyond where DELL preannounced.

Suit yourself, if expectations had only risen to where the earnings announcement actually was, then the stock would have risen to only $30 instead, about where it is.

Forgive the market, it's not perfect.

DJ,
Hi!!

Dell Sees 20% Sales Growth In 4th Quarter -4

Dow Jones, Thursday, November 14, 2002 at 16:55

Dell's 28% rise in overall third-quarter product shipments far outpaced what it said was a 2% increase for the rest of the industry.

Server volumes rose 24% during the quarter. The company said revenue from its enterprise products, which include servers, storage systems, network switches and workstations, jumped a combined 27%.

Dell derives about 80% of its revenue from its PC business.

The company said it continued to balance its desires for strong liquidity, profitability and growth. Third-quarter operating costs totaled 9.9% of revenue, equaling a company best.

Dell credited cost cuts, an improved mix of products and services, and lower component costs with driving the company's operating profit to $758 million, or 8.3% of revenue. The operating profit - the company's highest in two years - was up 39% from the third quarter last year.

Dell generated $954 million in cash from operations in the quarter. Cash and investments rose to a best-ever $9.1 billion at the end of the quarter.

DJ...How can the others compete? Sure Michael could've said this and that about the possible earnings...I'm more impressed he tells us and keeps that word...Too bad investors don't realize/listen to what he is saying about Linux, services, servers, storage, etc...What he has predicted about SUNW and "ingesting CPQ", etc...All have been and hopefully will continue to be just as accurate...

Doing all this with a 2% growth rate for all the rest...

Best, Kemble

I don't think MD wants to play games with numbers. The stock went up to 31 in anticipation of whisper numbers of .23 and game down to $30, where option traders wants to see it tomorrow.
