I thought about that.... But i wanted to make it more philosophical than just a love poem.... As in longings and desires in life...not just longings for a particular woman... Hence the genderless-ness in my translation... I think we attribute the gender to the lines due to our own perceptions....there is nothing in those lines which signifies a gender, or did i just miss it completely ? What do you think ? Am looking again now... Thank you for the vote of confidence...<smile> Edit : Actually he just wrote couplets, all in different moods, at different times....these were later conected together to rhyme for compilations and songs. So topics and subjects in the same ghazal vary, sometimes in extremes, from sublime to earthly, because often they weren't meant to be connected...but in this case, i now see that the rest of the ghazal is 'gender-ed' so you do have a point...and i'll modify it suitably. Thanx for the help.... I like the ungendered better though, but that may be because i'm too old and jaded LOL!

Ok. I have a confession to make. My well informed cousin just informed me that this is by Amir Minai, not Ghalib.... I'd been surfing the net last night...looking for a familiar ghazal to translate and this seemed to be an easy one. It doesn't even sound like Ghalib, it felt too mushy to be his, but the website said it was....so i thought maybe.....now maybe i'll sue the Jagjit Chitra site ! The premise that ghalib cannot be translated, remains ! LOL! And Amir Minai being hopelessly, incurably romantic....the gender HAS to be in.....you win hands down....<smile> Amir Minai...ugh...what will i think of next ? OTOH, the ghazal, is very popular... IAmSuchASnob.com
