tc ...

I think what you have given me will work, and I'm on my way back downstairs to try it ....

When I left earlier this morning with the black screen showing ...
I really thought it was "working on re-doing the system settings" and would be on screensaver when I got back ...

well, as you know ....
it was black when I returned ...

after trying a few things on my own
AND
calming down from SHEER PANIC MODE to STARK TERROR,
I posted here
and
decided to go to my noontime Rotary meeting ...

I've read all the comments
and I do appreciate them ...

I did a poor job of explaining in my first post *(as my life passed before my eyes) ....

I can get the dang box to come on in Safe Mode ok ...

it will even operate when I pick VGA mode as the selection in SAFE ....

I find the driver *(BUT I'm not sure it is THE driver which I loaded from the update this morning) and I know how to delete it ....

I feel as if this were happening under any earlier WinXX I could go either of several ways ...

device manager ==== delete the display adapter.... crank the box back up and install the original driver and be back working

or

display properties === settings ..advanced ... adapter ... change .... and install the original driver and be back working

my current difficulty *(as I won't go into my stupidity in loading the update ...ggggg)
is that I have three areas here about which I'm in highly unfamiliar territory ....

a flatscreen monitor
WinXP
NVidia card/driver

luckily I have four working boxes upstairs where I can have access to the web ... so, at least I am not blind

I'm going to try the outline that you have given me ....
and
I'll get back to the thread with a report ...

if someone else has any other ideas, feel free to post ....

sincerely,
deadmanwalkingnemer

tc is MY MAN

I'm typing this post on the "her Gateway" ....

key phrase is ROLL BACK DRIVER

works GREAT ....

thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou

and a magnificent thanks to all who have responded and helped ....

I'm going back upstairs and I might NEVER NEVER EVER use this machine again .... hehehehehehehe

btw ...
I did find one discussion on a black screen on a website I'd previously not been aware ....
it looked promising, and I'll go find it on whichever box I was using upstairs and post it ....

I'd joined an IT group out of Dallas at a seminar at which I met one of their members ....
I have NO talent of the level that those folks possess, but from time to time I have found their discussions interesting ...
anyway, I'll post it in a jiff .....

thanks again
and
IF you have a Gateway box running an NVidia card driving a Gateway FPD1500 flatscreen monitor ...
I can highly recco that you do NOT install the WindowsXP update from 9/27/02 ..... hehehehehehehe
