There is a great book out, I must have my friend return it as I cannot recall the exact title right now! The thesis is, that the earth is still in the midst of what we know as the "ice ages", and the present time period we are in now is simply a period in between regular app. 15,000 year events, otherwise known as interglacial warming. There have been several ice sheet advance in the last 500,000 years or so, and to assume that the exact very last one was 9,000 years ago is quite a bold timing call.

Canuck Dave,
The Ice Age thing was popular when I was in college, much like Global Warming is now. And quite likely was an attempt also to add some snap crackle and pop to the weather business along with the much desired dollars.

BTW,
Since I am unpaid, unnoticed weather hermit in a hex sign shop, such avaricious considerations have no effect on me, ggg.

Best Regards,

Roebear
