I've never seen a polar bear except in zoos. They live about a thousand miles north of where I live. They look benign, but I've heard about fools falling into the polar bear tank at the zoo and they are almost immediately attacked. I've read books about people in shacks or cabins in the arctic, and the polar bears make determined efforts to get at them. I like the Farside cartoon where the polar bears are contemplating an igloo. One says to the other: "I like the crunchy centers!"

A rather unpleasant method of killing them is to freeze a coil of whalebone in some blubber. The bear gobbles it up, and the whalebone uncoils as it thaws, stabbing the bear from the inside. I think it's a horrible thing to do, but life in the arctic does not include the concept of fair at all.
