Israel has no legal sovereign rights in the occupied territory which is recognized by the international community.

So what country does? The last recognized administrator was Great Britain. The territory has been occupied by Jordan, Egypt or Israel since.

Historical and religious claims to Eretz Israel are irrelevant

Property claims usually date from 1929 in Hebron and 1948 elsewhere. Too "historical" for you? The whole framework of regarding settlements as colonization of a foreign country doesn't fit reality. Two populations are arguing how to divide up one country, one territory. There is no foreign country. Arab Palestine has never existed.

Under these circumstances, settlers in Hebron become viable military targets because it is their presence which cause these chain of events to unfold

"cause these chain of events to unfold" As always, only the Jews act; the Arabs merely react like puppets. The onus of responsibility is only on the Israelis. Well I hate to spoil your perfect Nazi-like vision of the history of the territories, but the Palestinians have had, and still have, many other choices besides suicide bombings and random shootings. The Arabs may have the "perception" that everything is totally everybody else's fault and the world owes them "justice" (& screw the other guy), but they will just keep getting themselves in worse trouble until they learn to compromise.

What you write could very well apply to the US. We have enough on our plates in our occupation and continued efforts to stabilize Afghanistan. Too, we have economic and other problems including the threats of terrorism at home. How is it protecting our interests to start a war everyone else on the planet finds egregious.

The occupation of the West Bank has marginalized the Israelis' ability to defend themselves behind the Green Line. Valuable resources and manpower which should be devoted for the protection of Israeli civilians are being diverted to protect the narrow interests of a few religious, ideological zealots in the occupied territories. IDF are reduced into official babysitting or safeguarding chores of a disruptive settler population when they should be used for the security of Israel and hunting down militant terrorists. Money spent on maintaining the colonies in the occupied territories should be used to benefit Israelis at home. The colonization of the occupied territory is leading to the moral corruption and fragmentation of Israeli society.
