Actually the Universal account is for equities/futures/options/fx. It encompasses all electronically traded products. IB itself was massively profitable in 99/00 (to the tune of 1 Billion). The brokerage arm makes up a small percentage of their operational profitability. They primarily specialize in making markets in options. The key figure is the CEO who seems to have a strong vision for the retail arm. They have really put the pedal to the metal to ramp up their trading platform to be competitive with other institutional platforms. The customer service is limited but effective. The reliability is so high though you rarely if ever will be in contact with them. It will be interesting to see how big this company gets given their unique offerings.
