What's a penumbral eclipse?

**OT**

As you know a lunar eclipse results from the moon passing into the earth's shadow. Closer examination of that shadow revels two concentric circle components - an inner dark circle called the umbra surrounded by a lager outer circle called the penumbra. If you were in the umbra, the earth would completely occult the sun's disk. If you were in the penumbra, the earth would only partially occult the sun's disk. A penumbral eclipse occurs when the moon is completely within the penumbra, but not in the umbra.
