" Do you give the "anti-war" crowd the credit of Bush's going to the UN? "

Entirely.

As the old saying has it, Victory has a thousand fathers; Failure is an orphan.

Perhaps you are in the camp with many others who continue to underestimate Bush. My guess is that he has gotten more or less exactly what he wanted by acting like a wild eyed cowboy unilaterally ready to take down Saddam.

Containment is an utter failure with the UN security council members and other crucial allies unwilling to detach themselves from the lucrative deals doled out by Saddam in reward for supporting his corrupt regime. By forcing the (China, France, Syria, Russia) to throw inspections on Saddam Bush buys time to prepare for an invasion. This also accelerates the end of this phase of the Iraqi problem, Saddam either comes clean or in the mean time before Iraq is invaded his ability to develop further WMD is inhibited.

Bush called on the American people to support him and now Republicans have control of Congress and the UN is now reinvigorated to a large degree to prove its value.

From all reports no one thinks we are prepared to invade properly now nor will we be for another 6-8 weeks. Do you think we were going to be using the time from August to the New Year to try and build a coalition against Saddam with countries that have a vested interest in the status quo such as France, Russia, China and others?

The only viable alternative has been to either force the UN to inspect or to get out of our way. Who is to say this has not been the plan all along?
