Do not take that the wrong way. Layoffs are not laudable at all either to the layee or the layor. Nor do I look at them as desirable. Good people are hard to recruit and hard to keep. They, and I include you, should NOT be laid off if at all possible.

BUT these jobs are the branded duplicate jobs that compaq claimed were made redundant by their own determination because of the more direct model and their own determination of redundancy.

Comes the merger and we have redundant redunacy.

Still, no one got laid off. Some one suggested that this was the purchase of the goodwill of the employees for the merger.

What ever it is, it was announced 12 different times but NEVER executed.

That is usually just sign of weak management and accounting gimmicry.
