<<How much of this rally was on gap ups as opposed to actual buying of anything?

Can it go on forever?>>

Message 18244350 read this excellent post of a discussion of bearmarket rallies, and how the gaps ups are a characteristic--a lot of meat in this post of posts collected by Augie, another excellent contribution from Augie.
Regards the making of gap-ups need put under analysis has how they actually come about(rather then the standard "there was an imbalance of buy orders over sell orders orders").But as Fleckenstein says, we won't know until there is an investigation and that investigation won't happen, imo, ever. But yes there is nothing within the gap, that is where the term "gaps MUST be filled" come from, because they are actually empty.
P.S. we did during the raging most heated days of the bull commmonly have massive gap-ups on stocks due to the huge number of the clueless playing that didn't know how to place a Limit Order as all orders that are available that are not Limit Orders are used by MMs in Gap-ups.Hell you could have one outlandish high ask and every "at the market" buy order is sucked up at that price.
