If you succeed in making your definitions the definitions, you win. That's what I mean.

Dueling definitions just prolong the argument.

But in debate, I learned to be the first to throw out the definitions, then the other side looked weak when they said that's not what we mean by the term. I was already on my victory lap before they got their engines started.

In discussion, as opposed to competitive debate, it helps to stop a bit and talk about the definitions, then if it appears that definition is the problem, agree on definitions before proceeding, or agree that you aren't going to agree on definitions and then accept that there's no point in further discussion.
