We do not intend to infringe on people's rights: ASIO
The head of ASIO says he is not seeking to infringe people's rights by asking for more powers for his organisation.

A Senate committee examining a bill that would allow ASIO to detain and question people for up to two days without a lawyer has quizzed Dennis Richardson today.

He says the measure could be important in obtaining information that might prevent a planned terrorist attack.

"I have my views and they don't come from a mad, driven perspective of wanting to break laws and infringe on people's rights," he said.

"They come from a genuine concern to see put in place measures that i think are necessary in terms of terrorism and the like."
