Why would Lehman cut so much staff when we're just starting a new bull market??? Makes me take pause of all the bullishness on SI lately. mdb

JHP: This burgeoning lay-off wave is a Tsunamia. It amazes me that it gets so little press, particularly when it is recognized that "the consumer" is carrying the can as far as the current economy is concerned. Pink slips have a powerful effect not only on the buying ability of the recipient, but also on his neighbours, friends, acquaintances, etc., who start to (correctly) think along the lines of "I may be in that same ugly boat in the future, so I had better scale back my lifestyle". Of course none of this can have any impact on stock prices. (g) Best, Earlie
