Here's an article that spells out the next upgrade cycle a little,

Meta Group analysts have seen an increase in the number of requests for proposal (RFPs) for PC purchases from Meta Group clients. Most of the RFPs have start dates in 1Q03, indicating that corporate PC sales should experience a mild rebound after the new year.

The next major upgrade cycle will probably be driven by the introduction of the Microsoft Longhorn operating system, expected in 2005.

Therefore, in 2006 and beyond, companies will need to replace their client systems, regardless of what they buy now, to move to Longhorn.

A PC is a node on the network (+ spreadshet and word processing). There are 2 impediments to PC growth, now. One is insufficient bandwidth on the network and the other is MSFT. The first is being addressed. The second is the great problem that technological progress must try to overcome. So add the destruction of MSFT to the other two items on your wish list: the destruction of Al Qaida and the regime change in Iraq.
