We also have real estate that collapsed to almost zero in Eastern Germany.... But the artwork was portable... Stocks and bonds are easily saleable, transferable, etc.

Well wealth is the outcome of saving or of saving in previous generations or other capital appreciation (which the government economists don't count as saving).

I personally don't own any real estate. My mother has about 6% of total wealth in the small apartment she lives in... My parents didn't have much luck with making money from real estate - missed out on the huge boom in the London market in the last few years for example as they sold up and moved in 1995.
