the actions we take have an impact on the willingness of people to die a martyrs death.

I usually don't agree with GST, but this is most definitely true.

I do not know if 9/11 could have been prevented or not, but for one we could have avoided supporting a religious fanatic like Osama bin Laden back in the days of the Afghan war. This would have made 9/11 less likely. There are many other examples in which the US took the economically expedient route and paid a hefty political or military price for it (Somoza, Batista, Viet Nam).

<<We cannot placate al Qaeda -- we must cut off their funding and kill them. There is no disagreement about that. >>

And the US is doing that, including the invasion of Aghan with the Northern Alliance out front. The money part is very difficult. My understanding is that the US has been able to freeze only a small % of the funds of al qeada or those which they have access to.

But I dont think bin laden and al qeada care much about the palestinians, other than "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." They're much more concerned about the US presence in Saudi Arabia, most of which they see as sacred lands.

I would say we should get out of SA. Whatever it is we get from them by having personnel there, it's not worth it.
