I don't think bush is putting up with Powell. It's good cop, bad cop. Eisenhower and Dulles, only Dubya is Dulles.

If you believe Woodward got told any stories out of school, I think it's a mistake. Mostly from what I read they all look pretty good except for the ideologues who are exclusionary by nature. (And preemption as foreign policy doctrine is goofy. It's something you do, but it's always an exception.)

Bush's advisors have to be disagreeing with each other some of the time or there's something really wrong.

Powell's job is diplomacy. Notice he is getting folk onside in case the invasion comes.

There's actually no great reason to think Woodward's story about (eg) the work up to the UN speech is the the last word, or that he actually got it right.

He got access but it's his prism we're looking through.
