It isn't even "an interim step to 3G" like 1xRTT (not 3xRTT) used to be. In America EDGE is 3G. Juha Lappalainen could hardly keep a straight face when he showed up for the great 3G debate with Jeff Belk who was touting 1xRTT as 3G and he proacted with 3G EDGE (which combines with WCDMA in the GERAN with multiradio) as well as WCDMA. It was updated under the IMT-SC umbrella at more or less the same time that 1xEV-DO was upgraded to official IMT-2000 status under the IMT-MC umbrella.
