(but wait, is it even a legitimate proposition in the first place?)

Another serious question. I don't know, is it?

see if we have managed to make this a well-reasoned discussion without the paint brushes getting tooo large....

Personally, I think it is a subject too hot to handle. Maybe there just aren't enough facts to make it worthwhile? Maybe it's too early to tell what future political philosophy will prevail, and determine the fate of society? Nadine had some interesting questions in her post. Maybe they were rhetorical? Maybe no one cares?

Much of what is professed to be 'the truth about the liberals' around here, oddly enough, rarely seems to apply to me yet I willingly call myself a liberal. So, what do we do...how about this:

I am sure that I have contributed to that sense. I have been thinking with my mouth about again. My paradox sniffer was slobbering like wild dogs in heat. It took me a bit of thinking with my mouth open to see the paradox clearly. Since the election the responses from the left- and right- wing pundits and blogdits have been paradoxical. For the left, the world has ended and the seven-headed beast has returned. Prepare the battle of Armageddon. The feeling is that an ultra-right wing government with serious lapses in moral judgment had just been given the keys to whole castle. Meanwhile the right is thrilled about the election victory. A little surprise that Bush delivered such a clear win with a notable mandate on Homeland Security and a call to get busy with the economy. The pundits, dittoheads and blogdits are all ambivalent about GB2.0. Whatever your flavor of conservatisms Bush is letting you down. He is the barely acceptable conservative. He's no Ronald Regean but he's a damn sight better than that pop of his, so we will live with him. The right is hardly gleeful about the chances of a strong conservative agenda being implemented while the left is primarily and morally outraged at the imminent destruction of everything good and decent about America. I have some ideas of what is behind this paradox. It will take some work to sort it out for real but here is my swag at it. The demographics are changing for both parties but not for the betterment of either. Not only are the demographics changing the psychographics are changing as well. The older dichotomies between workers and managers, rich versus poor, white versus black that defined the political map for long are morphing into something new. The decision drivers for these new groups are also changing. The left are angry and screaming because they are going to have to change some of their views to attracts some of these newer groups (nurses who want effective systems on the job). The right is still partying a bit and hasn’t noticed that the middle of the party is waking up. Maybe we don't have to tolerate those religious right cooks anymore. There is a fault line in the right that could easily open up. The president will have to bring on some strong supply side economic reform to keep that gang happy and control the Pentecostals for speaking in tongues when the senate is in session. ;-) I need to do more to identify the new underlying groups (economically pragmatic environmentalists). I will take my thinking with my mouth open away and blab about this someplace else now. Sorry if I offended anyone.
