Her life is almost a textbook case of how to get power in DC if you are an Academic.

I realized pretty early on that being too calculating and careerist wasn't a good bargain for me. You lose your self-respect and that of the few other good people around, while only marginally increasing your chances at real access and power. For every Rice who plays the game perfectly and grabs the brass ring, there are dozens of others who try to do the same but never make it to where she did--but sell their souls along the way.

It's actually pretty depressing when I think about it, so I try not to that much. Basically, if you're smart and honest and frank and job-oriented and don't trim your sails to the prevailing winds, you pretty much face a glass ceiling at the upper middle levels of the power structure--say, the assistant secretary/NSC senior director location. A decent number of good folk reach there; very few get above it.

One thing I'm semi-dreading but am also very curious about is seeing who in my generation makes it to the top tier. With your peers, you tend to know better exactly what compromises each one has and hasn't made, so I will probably have very strong opinions about this kind of stuff 10, 20 years from now...
