Ive got an old p2 I'm going to use just for kicks.

I run Debian on a P4 1.8 GHz which is more than enough. But I've also successfully installed Debian on a P1 133 MHz - no prob.

Unfortunately Java is demanding on Linux, too, and even more disappointing: the Java Virtual Machine is less stable than for Windows.

Plus I work on and off in IT so learning new stuff is required.

Yes, the learning curve is considerable. For a start playing with Knoppix during a weekend might be ok. But eventually one has to dig deeper, and obviously there are loads of books and even more online resources. (So it would help to have a separate machine with a Net connection while Linux is configured.) Here's a collection of HOWTOs for a number of topics:
