From Briefing.com: Soundview raises price targets for select semi equipment stocks. Soundview believes that more evidence is mounting that Q1 could be the turn in the order picture for the semi capital equipment industry; favorites include KLAC, AMAT, RTEC, and TER; raises NVLS price target to $38 from $31, LRCX to $18 from $15, KLAC to $45 from $35, and TER to $20 from $12.

8:35AM Hewlett-Packard 2003 estimates trimmed ahead of earnings (HPQ) 16.55: Thomas Weisel trimming its 2003 est ahead of tonight's earnings report; reduces 2003 est to $1.13 from $1.21 (Multex consensus $1.16); firm mentions cautious update from Comdex and dissatisfaction from distributors.

8:32AM Starts weaker, permits stronger than expected : Housing Starts plunged 11.4% in October to a 1.603 mln unit rate, well below the 1.70 mln consensus. As we noted prior to the release, weather appears to have wreaked havoc with the Sep/Oct numbers - boosting Sep but depressing Oct. The evidence of this is found in the building permits number, which is not affected by weather. It rose 1.7% to 1.763 mln in October, better than the 1.70 mln consensus and indicative of a continued strong pace of housing activity.

8:30AM Housing Starts 1.603M vs 1.71M consensus; permits 1.763M vs 1.70M consensus : Note that starts are more impacted by weather than permits, so the relative strength in permits is probably a better indication of the underlying trend in housing.
