Are you aware of the first WTC bombing? Fairly small number of dead, but that certainly was not the intent of the bimbers. They inteneded to bring the towers down with the people in them.

How many have died in Palestine because of Islamic fundamentalist initiatives?

How many did the Taliban kill?

Are you aware that the first al Qaeda plane-bomb target was to be the Eiffel Tower in Paris?

They are just getting started. We can stop them now with smaller losses or later with much larger.

Your anti-Americanism has unhinged you.

And frankly we don't give a **** if it was "only" 3,000. We intend to stop it.

Terror

The numbers do not reflect the reality of the threat. The adjectives that apply to Nicaragua and Vietnam may be similar but they are encompassed and surpassed in every degree by the atrocity of the 9-11 attacks. The mindless attackers of Al Qaeda are a product of the dangerous infrastructure of fundamentalism. Al Qaeda attacks are intended to create polarization across all political boundaries, intended to cause reprisals against identifiable groups, intended to cause schisms. The women of Afghanistan (RAWA) make a lot of sense. Empowering those who can identify the threat would be an excellent place to start.

Another good place to start would be issuing a UN edict making it illegal for any male in Afghanistan to carry a weapon and additionally requiring that all women be visibly armed, perhaps they could distribute light blue handguns. Women could still elect to wear masks and walk behind their husbands while armed, I think some would like that. <g>
