A few issues ago, Foreign Affairs had an article on how great companies like Toyota, Honda and Nissan started out making very good entry level inexpensive cars and were very successful at doing so. The trend it examined was a drift towards making more luxurious, more expensive vehicles instead of staying with the bread and butter. I don't recall the article's conclusion or the reasons for it specifically, but I do recall that it criticized the trend as not being a particularly profitable one. My memory is dim on this point.

I hope Q keeps making cheap chips for all comers as well as the more expensive, high margin multi-mode chips. Doing so will dissuade competitors from entering the field.
