PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) - Computer and printer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - News) on Wednesday reported a quarterly net profit after charges and said revenue in the first quarter will rise slightly from the fourth quarter.

HP reported net income of $390 million, or 13 cents a share in its fiscal fourth quarter ended October 31. In the year-ago period, the combined operations of HP and Compaq would have reported a loss of $505 million, or 17 cents a share.

Excluding a number of items, HP reported a profit of $721 million, or 24 cents a share, compared with expectations among analysts polled by Thomson First Call of a profit of 21 cents to 24 cents, with the consensus a 22-cent profit on revenue of $17.3 billion.

Revenue was little changed at $18.05 billion compared with $18.17 billion, assuming combined operations of HP and Compaq.
